Gold IRA Scams & Red Flags
Pressure, opaque spreads, fear-based selling, unclear buyback language and unsupported guarantees deserve scrutiny.
What to know first
Pressure, opaque spreads, fear-based selling, unclear buyback language and unsupported guarantees deserve scrutiny. The practical goal is to reduce the decision to verifiable facts: what the account can legally hold, how money moves, who has custody, what you pay to buy and own the metals, and how you eventually sell or distribute them.
- Guaranteed returns or guaranteed appreciation.
- Refusal to provide the quoted price in writing.
- Pressure to buy collectible or premium products without clear rationale.
- Promises that home storage is unquestionably safe for an IRA.
- Buyback claims with no written process or pricing methodology.
Build an all-in cost picture
| Cost layer | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dealer purchase price | Exact price for the same metal at the same time | Dealer economics may be reflected in the spread, not a separate commission line. |
| Account administration | Setup and annual custodian fees | These can recur even when no metal is traded. |
| Storage | Depository charge and storage method | Physical IRA assets need a compliant custody arrangement. |
| Transactions | Wire, distribution, shipping or closure costs | Exit costs affect the total economics. |
Dealer quotes should be compared at the product level. If two companies quote different prices for the same weight and type of bullion, the difference can matter more than a small variation in annual account fees. Ask how the dealer determines its sell price and how it would determine a future repurchase price.
Sales language that deserves extra scrutiny
Be cautious when a pitch uses urgency, guaranteed appreciation, claims that a specific political or economic event makes a purchase unavoidable, or assertions that a promotional bonus is economically free without explaining how product pricing works. A legitimate transaction should survive a pause for independent comparison.
Questions to ask before acting
- What exact problem am I trying to solve with this account or investment?
- What are the simpler or lower-cost alternatives?
- What is the all-in first-year cost and expected ongoing annual cost?
- What facts are coming from the dealer, and what facts are coming from primary legal or tax sources?
- How will I exit, rebalance, sell or take distributions later?
